If it's the first weekend of November, it must be time for the Harvard-Brown game and the start of conference play in the ECAC. Harvard entered the game as favorites, but Brown netminder Scott Stirling stopped all 15 Crimson shots in the first, and Bruno took a 1-0 lead on the power play. They made it 2-0 on a five-on-three in the second, and delivered the knockout blow eight minutes later when Jade Kersey stepped out of the penalty box and into a breakaway, beating Harvard's J. R. Prestifilippo for Brown's third goal. The Bears never looked back and registered a 4-1 upset win. Stirling finished with 28 saves and was named the ECAC's Goaltender of the Week.
Friday saw the year's second non-conference game between ECAC opponents, as RPI and Union met in the third annual Capital Skate Classic. This year's game was moved from its traditional site in Albany to the Glens Falls Civic Center, where a crowd of under 2000 watched the travel partners battle into overtime before Pete Gardiner scored just shy of the three-minute mark to give Rensselaer the 3-2 win.
In interconference play, Clarkson dropped a pair in North Dakota, falling 6-2 and 5-1 to the WCHA regular season champions, while a pair of Ivy teams prevailed over Division I independent Niagara. Cornell pulled out their game Friday night in dramatic fashion, with Sophomore Larry Pierce scoring the game-winning goal with only 19 seconds left in the 3-2 contest, while Dartmouth used four unanswered goals to pull out an 8-5 barnburner Saturday afternoon. Cornell's Dave Francis earned Rookie of the Week honors for his heroics, tying the score at 2 late in the third, a minute after Niagara had taken a 2-1. Player of the Week went to Dartmouth Senoir Curtis Wilgosh, who had two assists and two goals, including the gamewinner, in the Big Green's victory over Niagara.
Hockey East foe Boston University got their first win of the season Friday in a 9-1 bloodletting of Princeton. The Tigers still need to fill the gaping hole left by the graduation of netminder Erasmo Saltarelli, as Junior Craig Bradley stopped only 16 shots against 8 goals before being replaced by Senior Nick Rankin, who let in one of four. Harvard fared considerably better against Hockey East competition Sunday, downing UMass 3-1 in Amherst.
There were a few exhibition games against Canadian squads; Acadia swept down with a 3-2 overtime win Friday at Vermont, and followed that up with a 3-1 victory Saturday at Dartmouth. Yale provided the ECAC's one international triumph, hammering McGill 7-2.
Brown step into first place, a position they did not hold all last season, with their win over Harvard.

St. Lawrence remain at #10 in the US College Hockey Online Poll, in which Yale and Brown also received votes. However, the Saints, idle this week, are displaced from the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll by the University of Denver.

It's time for the first full weekend of ECAC play, and the most enticing action looks to be in the North Country as last year's regular season champions Yale and playoff champions Princeton visit this year's preseason favorites Clarkson and quick starters St. Lawrence. Meanwhile in New England Colgate and Cornell are at Brown and Harvard, while Vermont and Dartmouth host Union and RPI.
