The ECAC dove into its first weekened of play, and as expected three teams finished the weekend at 2-0. The big surprise was that one of those teams was not Yale but Clarkson. The Elis shocked the Knights 2-1 Friday night, and followed that up with a 3-0 shutout of St. Lawrence Saturday. Princeton managed a three-point weeend with 2-2 a tie of SLU followed by a 3-2 upset of Clarkson. The Knights have been anything but Golden these past two weeks, between a one-point weekend at home against Ohio State and this latest sweep.

In Ithaca, Cornell had a wild weekend, dominating Harvard 5-2 Friday in the annual fish-and-fowl grudge match (the Crimson finish 1997 0-3-1 at Lynah Rink) and coming back from a 3-1 deficit with three goals in the last four minutes to down Brown 4-3. For the Bruins it was a familiar scene after leading Colgate 3-0 only to lose 5-4. Rounding out the fireworks in Central New York, Harvard's Trevor Allman capped a hat trick with power play goal with under 90 seconds left to break a 5-5 tie and give the Crimson the 6-5 victory at Colgate.

Finally, there were few surprises in the Capital District as Rensselaer rolled to 7-1 and 7-2 wins over Dartmouth and Vermont, respectively. Union managed a split, blanking UVM 1-0 before themselves being shut out 4-0 by Dartmouth.

Standings

Yale provide Cornell and RPI with unexpected company atop the ECAC this week, while Clarkson and Vermont are unfamiliar roommates of Brown in the cellar:

The National Scene

Rensselaer's impressive weekend sweep was not enough to move them back into the US College Hockey Online Poll, but Cornell managed to improve their standing from tenth to a seventh-place tie. The 3-0 Big Red are the first ECAC squad this season to be ranked higher than #10. Other ECAC representatives receiving votes were RPI, Colgate and Princeton.

Upcoming Games

A slightly abbreviated conference schedule this weekend is hightlighted by Saturday night's battle between travel partners Clarkson and St. Lawrence in Potsdam. There are also five Ivy league games, with Princeton and Yale visiting Harvard and Brown, while Cornell and Colgate head to Northern New England to take on Dartmouth and Vermont.

The Capital District teams are seeing some nonconference action this week; RPI and Union face off for their second annual extra contest at the Knick, and then on Saturday Renselaer host Niagra while Union entertain Mass-Amherst.
